In India, the first luxury train was started on 26th January 1982 which was named 'Palace on Wheels'. It started from Delhi. In those days, it was the only train, which attracted a large number of foreigners. But in the year 2010, India started 4 more luxury trains and passengers got 5 options to have their luxurious journey. These trains provide luxury treatments and their fares vary according to the facilities given to a passenger.

1. Palace on Wheels


The train starts from Delhi and will give you a ride to 7 major tourist spots of India in the time span of 7 nights and 8 days, majorly Jaipur, Sawai Madhopur, Chittaurgarh, Udaipur, Jaisalmer, Jodhpur, Bharatpur, and Agra. The train has 23 coaches and 104 tourists can travel in this train at a time. And the interesting thing about this train is that each coach has been named on the Rajput states of the country. You will have the royal experience in this train. It charges 2.75 Lakh from each tourist in the months from October-March and 2 Lakh in April.

2. Maharaja Express


Starts from New Delhi, the train runs on 5 circuits of the country covering more than 12 destinations across North-West and Central India. This train is also centered at Rajasthan. The train has 23 coaches, which include dining, bar, lounge, generator and store cars. The total capacity of the train is 88 passengers. The normal fare of the train is 4.5 Lakh to 16 Lakh for 7 days and Rs. 2.75 Lakh to 8.25 Lakh for 3 days.

3. Deccan Odyssey


From the beautiful beaches of Goa to Ajanta and Ellora caves and royal cities of Rajasthan, the train takes you on the luxurious ride through hinterlands of Maharashtra, Western Ghats, Deccan Plateau and Konkan Regions of the country. The train starts from Mumbai CST every Wednesday and returns back in 7 days. The train has 40 deluxe cabins in 10 coaches. The train also has a mini gym, a parlor, bar, restaurants, and other 5 star facilities. Its fare ranges from 2.90 Lakh to 4.35 Lakh.

4. The Golden Chariot


It shows the beautiful places of Indian states of Karnataka, Goa, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry. It has 19 coaches colored with purple and gold. It starts from Bangalore on every Monday. It has several facilities like dining, spa treatment, lounge bar and conference bar. This train has been awarded the title of “Asia's Leading Luxury Train” at the World Travel Awards, 2013. For Indians, the fare of the train is 1.62 Lakh and 2.85 Lakh for foreigners for 7 nights and 8 days itinerary.

5. Royal Rajasthan on Wheels


The Royal Rajasthan on Wheels is modeled on the Palace on Wheels and follows a similar route through Rajasthan. It takes tourists on 7 days and 8 nights tour to several important tourism, wildlife and heritage sites across Rajasthan. It has 14 luxury cabins and other facilities like dining, Souvenir coach and spa and recreation. Some of the tourist attractions covered are Hawa Mahal, Moti Mahal, Sheesh Mahal, Ranthambore National Park, Agra Fort and Taj Mahal. The fare of the train is 3 Lakhs to 4.15 Lakhs.
